Zamseed Company limited has maize varieties to cutter for farmer’s needs and environmental conditions (Agro ecological regions) of the country and the surrounding regions at large. Zamseed has varieties in 400 series indicating early maturing varieties, early to medium maturing 500 series, medium 600 maturing series, and late maturing varieties 700 series. The hybrid varieties are resistant to all common maize diseases and the cobs have good husk cover which prevents against cob rots. The varieties also have grain type which semi-dent to flint preventing them against insect damage and thus good for storage and milling quality.
The following describes Zamseed varieties which are on the market;
This is an early maturing double cross hybrid with small plant architecture. The plant height is about 200cm and ear placement is as low as 80cm. The leaves are dark green in color whilst the leaf blades are of medium size. Flowers form at about 57 days after sowing and the silks follow 2-3 days later. The hybrid produces a long cylindrical cob that has 12-16 rows and fairly covered by the husk. The grains are small round, flint to semi-flint with a hard texture.
The variety yields well up to 7ton/ha and has very good resistance and tolerance to lodging and drought respectively. The variety has fairly good resistance to most common maize diseases and is suitable for regions I and II. For its earliness and sweetness the hybrid is ideal for green maize.
This is a medium-early maturing double cross hybrid. The hybrid has medium sized plants of height 240cm and a cob placement of 110 cm. The leaf blades are of medium size and the plants flower 57 days after sowing, with silks coming out 2-3 days later. The cobs are cylindrical and thick, fully covered by the husk with up to 16 rows. The grains are semi-dent, flat and hard textured.
This hybrid has fairly good resistance to most maize diseases. The yields are up to 9ton/ha maturing within 110 days. The hybrid is most suitable for region I and II especially small scale farmers.
ZMS 528 is a medium-early maturing three way cross hybrid. It has plants of medium height (240cm) with cobs forming at 120cm. The leaves are dark green with long narrow leaf blades and flowering occurs at 58 days after sowing whilst silking 2-3 days later. The cobs are medium thick in diameter, long and cylindrical forming 12-16 rows. The core of the cob is white and the cob is fully covered by the husk. The grains are flint with medium round shape and hard texture.
ZMS 528 has very good drought tolerance and lodging resistance. It also has excellent GLS resistance and good resistance to cob rots, MSV, leaf blight and rust. The variety yields up to 9mt/ha and it’s adapted to all maize growing areas maturing within 115days. It’s very ideal for small scale farmers as yields are stable even under low fertility.
ZMS 606 is a medium maturing three way cross hybrid. The plants are of medium height (240cm) and cobs are formed at about 120cm. The leaves are of medium length and width with a medium dark green color. The tassels are produced 65 days after sowing and the silks follow 2 days later. The cobs have a medium cylindrical shape and thickness with 16-18 rows and well covered by the husk. The grains are hard textured, semi-dent and white. The yield potential is high, 7-10ton/ha and the hybrid reaches maturity after 120 days. The hybrid has good resistance to GLS and leaf blights, and excellent resistance to MSV, rust and cob rots. The hybrid is widely adapted to all maize growing regions of the country. The hybrid also has a tendency of double cobbing making it more suitable and appealing for the small scale farmers.
This is a medium maturing three way cross hybrid. The plants are tall, strong and vigorous and have a height of 265cm and cob placement of 145cm. The leaves are dark green, long and wide giving the hybrid a very leafy appearance. The hybrid flowers at 63days after sowing and silk at 65days after sowing then maturity is reached at 125days. The cobs are very thick and short to medium, with 14-16 rows. The hybrid produces medium round semi-flint hard grains. The yield potential is high (7-10mt/ha) and drought tolerance and lodging resistance are very good. Disease resistance to GLS, MSV is excellent and very good for leaf blights, rust and cob, rots. The hybrid is well adapted to all agro-ecological regions of the country except in valley areas.
This is a medium maturing double cross hybrid. The plants are of medium height (250cm), the cob placed at about 130cm and the stems are medium thick. The leaves are of medium sized blades with a medium green color. The plants flower 62days after sowing and silk 2-3 days later. The cobs are long (22cm), thick with 16 rows and well covered with medium sized and semi flint grains.
The yield potential is high (12ton/ha). The hybrid takes 130days to mature and has good resistance and tolerance to lodging and drought respectively. The resistance to GLS, MSV, rust, leaf blights and cob rots is very good. The hybrid is adapted to regions I, II and III and will perform well on both dry and irrigated lands.
This is a medium maturing, single cross hybrid with a medium, conical plant type. It has a medium plant height of about 245cm with an ear placement at about 125cm. The leaves are dark green and tasseling is at 60days with silks coming out 2-3 days later. The hybrid produces a medium thick cylindrical and long cob of length 22cm. The core is white in color and the ear gives up to 16 rows and has a full husk cover. The grains are white, medium size, semi-flint and hard with 1000 grains weight of 380g and 90% shelling percent.
The hybrid is very vigorous with high yields of up to 13mt/ha. It reaches maturity in 130days and because of its conical shape it has excellent resistance to lodging. Ti has very good resistance to all common maize diseases including GLS, leaf blights, MSV and cob rots. The hybrid is well adapted to regions II and III, and is most suitable for commercial farmers that have irrigated fields because of its higher performance in irrigated lands.
This is a prolific double cross hybrid with tall, thick stemmed strong plants. The hybrid grows up to 270cm and the ear placement is at about 150cm. The leaves are dark green with long wide blades. Flowering occurs at 65days after sowing and the silks follow after 2-3 days. The cobs are long (24cm), thick, cylindrical with 16-18 rows. The grains are large flat, semi-dent and medium hard textured. The 1000 grain weight is very high (450g) and the shelling percent is up to 86%.
The yield potential for this hybrid is up to 12mt/ha. Drought tolerance for this variety is fair but lodging resistance is very good due to its thick stems.
