Sorghum - Harvesting

Harvesting can be done as soon as grain is dry enough for combine harvest around moisture of 14%. Hand harvesting can be done much earlier and heads sun dried. Delayed harvesting causes unnecessary losses.

Harvesting can be done manually or mechanically by a combine harvest, short height varieties like WSH 287, MMSH 413, MMSH 375 and Gambia can be combine harvested while tall varieties, SIMA and ZVS 12 must be hand harvested. Hand harvested heads can be threshed by a stationary combine, by hand beating or running a tractor on the layers of sorghum heads on a concrete floor.

In hybrid seed production male rows should not be used as seed. An inspector should visit the field before female rows are harvested.
