|The conventional methods of tillage and seedbed preparation are followed when growing sunflower. The use of any appropriate implement, ox driven or motor driven is done. The choice of the implement is dependent on the type of soil. In general tillage must be done to adequately turn the top soil so as to bury residue and control weeds. Where erosion is a potential problem minimum tillage can be adopted. Planting on ridges has not been general practice with sunflower in Zambia, but could be adopted in heavy rainfall areas to facilitate drainage and avoid water logging.
