Wheat - Harvesting

The seed crop should be harvested only when it is completely ripe and the grain moisture content is below 14%. Harvesting at moisture contents below 10% may, however, result in a large number of broken grains. Combine harvesters are a major source of varietal mixture, and must be very carefully cleaned between different seed lots and varieties. This exercise is likely to take at least four hours if done properly, unless the combine is specifically designed for easy cleaning. The first five bags of the seed crop should be discarded and sold as commercial grain. The rest should be put into new, individually labelled bags and placed in a safe dry store stacked clear of other seed lots and crops. The yield of irrigated andrainfed wheat is 4500-6000 kg/ha and 1800-2500kg/ha respectively.
