Sunflower - Harvesting

Harvesting can be started when both the head and bracts have turned brown. For composites, several harvests may be necessary. Spiking is encouraged to hasten drying in the field and also as protection against bird damage. Because sunflower may shatter, it is advisable to harvest the crop as soon as the head browning stage is attained. Overdried heads make winnowing a bigger job, since more chaff from broken heads will be mixed with the seed.
